“A really special songwriter" - Lachie Macara, Triple J
"The Sea Has Risen" is the first single taken from Carmody’s forthcoming debut EP Shadow in the Dream (October 2017). It is a powerfully contemporary song about love in the time of a rising sea. Carmody’s visceral lyrics and emotive delivery are accompanied by opulent and moody arrangements (co-produced by Bensen Thomas); eddying synths and jangling guitars recalling the experimental Antipodean pop of Nick Cave, The Go-Betweens and Crowded House.
Sam Carmody has been active in WA’s music scene for several years as a writer for various projects. In 2012 he won a West Australian Music Industry (WAMi) song award for his work with Perth four-piece, Warning Birds.
In 2016, Carmody released his debut novel The Windy Season, the novel shortlisted for the Vogel’s Award—Australia’s most prestigious literary prize for young writers.
“The Sea Has Risen” is his first solo musical release. Like his acclaimed first novel, “The Sea Has Risen” marks “the arrival of a powerful new Australian voice” (Corrine Hent, Courier Mail).
